Volunteer Opportunities

The Luckiamute Watershed Council is a community-based organization comprised of volunteers. We need your help to improve the health of our watershed and our communities. There are many ways to get involved. Training is given to all volunteers and support is available as needed. We’d be happy to meet with you to discuss how your interests would best match up with the opportunities the Council has to offer. If you’re interested in becoming an LWC volunteer, please email the LWC at info@luckiamutelwc.org.

A few of the roles we have to fill are:

Event Planner/Assistant: Annually the LWC hosts a Council Celebration and Volunteer Recognition event. The Outreach and Education Committee coordinates the event and assigns volunteer awards. Tasks include: organizing entertainment, food, volunteer awards and/or advertising for the event. Working conditions: Indoors, individual & part of a committee, flexible hours.

Gardeners: Restoration sites are maintained by volunteers for the first year or two of the project. Tasks include: planting, weeding, maintaining protective tubes and watering. Working conditions: Outdoors, as part of a team, various days & times of the year, flexible hours.

Crew Leaders: The LWC undertakes several volunteer work-parties each year to clean up streamside areas, as well as a Polk County "Adopt-A-Road" site on Buena Vista Road. Tasks include: registering volunteers, instructing fellow volunteers on the tasks for the day and tallying/reporting the day’s work to the LWC contact person. Working conditions: Outdoors, as part of a team, a few Saturdays throughout the year.

Community Educators: There are many K-12 outdoor educational opportunities in our area. We are always in need of additional volunteers to help us conduct meaningful experiences for our youth. Tasks based on skill level and previous experience may entail: Assisting with an educational demonstration, gathering supplies for an activity and/or leading a workshop. Working conditions: Varies – outdoors or indoors, with a partner, typically a few weekdays in the spring & fall months.

Culvert Surveyors: The LWC is currently undertaking a project to assess potential barriers to fish in priority streams throughout the watershed. Tasks include: walking up streambeds, taking precise measurements of barriers encountered and electronically recording data. (Training is provided). Working conditions: Outdoors, as part of a team, 2-days per month during the summer.

Water Quality Monitors: The LWC conducts water quality tests at various locations throughout the watershed during the summer months. Tasks include: Visiting monitoring sites once a month to collect water quality samples and record data. Working conditions: Outdoors, with a partner, during the summer months, flexible hours.

Archivist: Throughout the year, the LWC hosts and partakes in many events. The various media articles and photos need to be organized & compiled in one central location. Tasks include: Electronically filing photos, copying and creating lists of news articles. Working conditions: Indoors, individual task, flexible hours.

Committee Members: The LWC has two working committees: Outreach & Education and Project Committees. Both groups actively coordinate the work of the Council and oversee the Council’s activities. Tasks include: participation in meetings, providing direction & feedback to council staff and reporting activities to fellow LWC members. Working conditions: Indoors, as part of team, 1-evening per month.
